As we enjoy the final days of summer, we would like to share with you a recent project from our very own Mr. Kyle Jiron. Bringing a unique approach to a historic city, he was able to capture the beauty of Washington D.C. in a way that even residents – who long ago grew acclimated and bored with the monuments – can appreciate. A few words from Mr. Jiron:
During the summer, sometimes you just need to slow down and simplify. It’s the time to lounge on a hammock, watch the sunset, clear your cluttered mind, and enjoy the simple things. Ashley Flores, a student at Arizona State University, believes that this simplicity of the summer months can be applied to fashion: “Summer fashion is all about paring your outfits down to the basics. All you need is a sundress and sandals. Simple.”
On a beautiful August afternoon, I tried to capture Ashley’s simple summer beauty as she explored the some of DC’s most iconic sites. She was great to work with and was a natural in front of the camera. As she wandered around the National Mall, she was very much at ease, making it easy for me to merge the beautiful landscape and architecture with the small but significant pieces of her personality – kindness, wisdom, sweetness, and vulnerability.
Even though millions upon millions of tourists from all over the world have photographed these national landmarks, I wanted to look at them from a different perspective. Instead of the focus of the photos, the sites became the background, setting the overall tone. Ashley was the actress, and the monuments, memorials, and historic buildings were her stage. She played off of them, focusing on natural movement and personal expression, rather than simply posing in front of the DC landmarks.
To cap our day of shooting off, Ashley suggested burgers and fries. She is a real down home, sweet all-American girl and a great pleasure to work with. Enjoy the photo collection and the beauty of this wonderful city that we locals often take for granted.
