Music Monday: New Album Alert

9 Aug
Just a reminder, we are now using a new system for rating albums. There will be no Five-Mics, Four Stars, or Three Thumbs-Up. Instead, we are simply going to tell you whether or not it’s worth your time and money. Oh yeah, and why not pay tribute to the funniest man alive at the same time. Bring Dave Back! Hit the break for more…

Wack!
This is an album that needs to be purified in the waters of Lake Minnetonka! This CD is known to contain high amounts of cancer-causing and ear drum-bursting sound waves. Enter at your own risk.
What?
This kind of album will get you stupid crunk every every once in a while, but may only be tolerable in small doses. When you hear it, you’ll probably be thinking something along the lines of “Whaaaaat?” Maybe it will grow on you, or maybe it will grow ON you. Proceed with caution.
Mmm Mmmm!
Kind of like the career of Mr. Samuel L. Jackson, this album is going to have some really impressive parts, but also some that are not so memorable. But overall a very solid, high quality album that deserves recognition. You don’t have to buy it, but at least try it!
Crack!
Listening to this album will deliver an intensity of pleasure completely outside the normal range of human experience. Highly addictive in nature, this album will bring you to a wonderful state of consciousness, and the most intense sense of being alive you will ever enjoy, kinda like something else. Just press play.

My Sick Uncle – 500 Days of Weezy

Dropping Lil’ Wayne vocals over the soundtrack to (500) Days of Summer sounds like a terrible idea, but it turns out to brilliant combination. It’s been called “a gift for white people”, but really this free mash-up album is a gift for anyone who can appreciate all sorts of music. Hearing Weezy’s raspy raps over Zooey Deschanel’s beautiful voice is an audio experience you won’t find anywhere else. The artist behind this creation, My Sick Uncle, offers his apologies to Morrissey and Simon & Garfunkel “for fucking with your songs”, but there is nothing here to be sorry for. Open your mind, open your ears, and give this one a listen.

Wale – More About Nothing

Living in the DMV, I had the opportunity to listen to Wale for years before he became nationally famous. I’ve been a fan of his since Paint a Picture tape, back when he was vying for a record deal. He was carrying the hopes and dreams of every aspiring rapper in D.C. hoping to make it big on his back, and you could tell he knew it because every single rhyme was on point. Now, with his strong performance in The Mixape About Nothing, you would think the sequel would build on his successes. Well, you would be wrong. The Seinfeld samples are entertaining, but this tape is lacking Wale’s signature hard-hitting punchlines and nifty wordplay, and stinks of too many lovey-dovey slow raps. I understand being compassionate and romantic, but you’re trying to hard with this whole spoken-word thing, son. Fat Trel, Wiz Khalifa and Northeast Groovers each saved the songs they were on, but I literally threw this joint out my car window, and I strongly advise you to do the same. Rest In Peace to the Go-Go Raps.

J Dilla – Donut Shop
No review or rating can do J Dilla justice, so just go download this free release from Stones Throw & the J Dilla Estate. Salute one of the best to ever do it.

Kent M$NEY – Becoming

To be completely honest, I only downloaded this one for the production: it’s laced with beats from Boi-1da, Hit-Boy, Big K.R.I.T, and one of the best producers doing it right now, Chase N. Cashe. However, the newest member of The Surf Club, Kent M$NEY, didn’t go unnoticed on his debut. He has plenty of room for improvement, but he did a pretty good job of turning these beats into quality songs. Nice way to start out your career.

Freddie Gibbs – Str8 Killa No Filla

Gangster Rap is pretty much dead, but don’t tell that to Freddie Gibbs. The Gangsta from Gary flexes his muscles on this one with fast raps and captivating story-telling rhymes. The self-comparisons to Tupac are a little bit much, but Gibbs definitely did his thing on this tape. This tape is essentially his album, but with DJ Burn One and some extra songs, so if you like it be sure to go download the album.

Earl Sweatshirt – Earl
I had never heard of Earl Sweatshirt until about a few months ago, but now he and his crew (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) are in constant rotation in my car. The unconventional flows, dark beats, and evil lyrics would make Ice-T proud, but are not for the weak of heart. No, seriously. He makes Eminem look like Michelle Obama. Oh, and he’s only sixteen years old. Read his own description of the free album and decide for yourself if you’re ready to listen to it:

“Earl Sweatshirt Releases His First Fucking Album. Lyrics About Rape, Coke, And Couches Will Be Blaring In  Your Ears With The Dopest Fucking Beats To Date. Featuring Production By Tyler The Creator, Left Brain And Others.”

Mike G – ALI

This is another project from the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) camp, and just as vile as the Earl album. It features many of the same artists, and has the same distinctive style, so if you like Earl Sweatshirt you’ll love Mike G. Even the skits are hilarious. Once again, see what he has to say about it himself, and peep game:

“So today (4 years ago) is the day that Proof died. So I decided to put this out today. This is my EP just a little something for the occasion. OF is offically the team now so this is my membership fee. There’s no conforming in me so I don’t want you to think that if you listen. Either way this was really fun to make and I got some of my favorite people on here.”

11 Jul

Here’s a little something we put together to help you through your Music Monday…

An up and coming Florida emcee, Laws landed two great features from Emilio Rojas and Big K.R.I.T. for the remix of his most popular song to date, Hold You Down. Huge props for the Guru shout out toward the end of the song!

After falling off the face of the planet for a couple months, on Thursday Wale popped back on the scene in a big way. He not only announced his next mixtape More About Nothing, but also dropped a free track that won’t be on there. Yupp, Wale is back.

If you haven’t heard him yet, you need to check out Miguel Jontel. He’s Filipino, so of course he’s going to be great! Blu fans may know him from the tracks “First Things First” and “Cold Hearted”, and the rest of the world will know him soon. Also, J.Cole continues his streak of murdering features, fitting in perfectly with Miguel over this smooth beat.

Fresh out the DMV, mC goes gives us his interpretation of Rihanna’s single. Catch him on Twitter!

Yeah that’s right, Justin Bieber. Well, technically Bieber mixed with Paul McCartney & Wings. I can promise that this mix of “Baby” and “Live and Let Die” sounds nothing like what you think. Check it out for yourself. It’s surprisingly awesome.
